Why is it best to start it right NOW?
Believe it or not laser hair removal is best started in the winter! This is because of a variety of factors.
It will be finished for your next summer holiday
Most people require at least 6 sessions to be completely hair free so with this in mind you’ll need about 6 months to get your sessions done. Starting in December is the ideal time if you imagine you’ll need a session a month.
You have to stay out of direct sunlight during treatment
Whilst having laser hair removal done it is best to avoid sunlight touching the skin as much as possible straight after treatment. This is because the skin is sensitised with the laser beam and it is vulnerable to burning and hyper and hypo pigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation is the lightening of the skin and hypopigmentation is darling of the skin. This often happens in patches and can be quite unsightly. You are at particularly high risk of this if you have a darker skin tone and you should be extra careful.
Wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF30+ is the best way to protect your skin when you are out in the sun and prevent skin damage. Sunbathing and sunbeds are not recommended 30 days after treatment so this is why it is vital that you only have laser done when you are not going on holiday.
Your skin need to be as close to it natural colour as possible
Due to the way the laser works, the treatment is safer and more successful if your skin is its normal colour. When you sunbathe and your skin darkens it makes it more difficult for the laser to distinguish between the hair pigment and the skin pigment. This means that the light energy that the laser produces gets wasted and not used effectively to destroy the hairs. Read more about the how it works here.
